Using DJI Focus Motor
If you are using a DJI RS2 / RS2 Pro / RS3 Pro / RS4 / RS4 Pro / RS5, you can remotely control your lens zoom using the DJI Focus Motor. This motor is included in the Pro Combo package.
For the best performance, we recommend using custom follow focus gears for your lens (e.g., from followfocusgears.com).
The universal ring included with the DJI motor will also work, but may provide less grip.
Setup Instructions
Follow these steps to install and calibrate the DJI Focus Motor:
1. Prepare the Gimbal
⚠️ Update your gimbal to the latest firmware using the DJI Ronin app before starting.
2. Mount the Focus Motor
-
Attach the DJI Focus Motor to your gimbal following the official DJI instructions.
Ensure the motor is firmly tightened to your lens so it doesn’t slip at the endpoints. -
Connect the motor to the gimbal’s USB-C port labeled “II” using the original DJI cable.
3. Set the Motor Mode
💡 For the DJI Focus Pro motor, set the motor LED to F (Focus) mode.
Even though we will use it for Zoom Control, the motor must be set to F mode as we can only access this mode.
4. Run Auto-Calibration
Run an Autocalibration (not a manual calibration), either via the Motor Calibration button on the Motion page in Middle Control, or directly on the gimbal screen:
- On the gimbal LCD, swipe from right to left to open the settings.
- Select Focus Motor Endpoints.
- Press, then select Focus Motor Calib.
- The motor will automatically detect the lens endpoints.
If the lens slips during calibration, gently hold the lens in place to help the motor.
Using the Motor with Middle Control
Once calibration is complete:
- Moving the Zoom slider in Middle Control will drive the motor smoothly from wide to tight across the full zoom range of your lens.
- macOS
- Windows

During live production, we recommend controlling Zoom with one of the following:
- With the Middle Remote (twist/rotation of the 3-axis joystick)
- With a USB gaming joystick (twist/rotation of the 3-axis joystick)
- With Companion using the Z+ / Z- buttons of our custom Companion Pages
- Through Visca over IP with Middle Control Pro
The APC-R supports a single DJI Focus Motor at a time, and it can only be used for zoom control.
