Turn your Sony FX3 into a PTZ Head

The Problem​

The Sony FX3 has become a default for documentary, indie cinema, and high-end event work — small body, full-frame sensor, cinema log curves. Dedicated broadcast PTZ heads can't deliver that look, and most of them won't take a Sony body anyway. You want remote pan / tilt / zoom with the FX3 image quality you already trust.

The Solution​

Combine three pieces of gear:

  • A Sony FX3 (or FX3A)
  • A DJI RS-series gimbal with an RSA port and adequate payload — RS3 Pro, RS4 Pro, or RS5 recommended for the FX3 + lens combination
  • An APC-R, APC-R Mini, or APC-R Mini Lite
  • A Mac running Middle Control

You now have a fully remote, network-controllable PTZ rig with full-frame cinema-quality output:

  • Pan / tilt / zoom through the DJI gimbal, smoothly driven by the APC-R
  • Camera control (iris, ISO, shutter, WB, tint, focus, REC, menu navigation) directly from Middle Control
  • Tally support out of the box on the APC-R Mini

Camera control paths​

The FX3 connects directly to your network — there's no APC-R Bluetooth pairing for Sony cameras. Two control paths are supported:

  1. Via Wi-Fi — Pair the FX3 over Wi-Fi for cable-free camera control. Best on a 5 GHz network.
  2. Via Wired LAN — Connect via a supported USB-Ethernet adapter for the most reliable, lowest-latency control.

The APC-R still earns its keep on this rig: it drives the gimbal (pan / tilt / zoom, presets, Active Track, focus motor) over the same network, while the FX3 handles its own camera control directly.

How it works​

  1. Mount the FX3 on the DJI gimbal — confirm balance and that your gimbal's payload rating covers your camera + lens.
  2. Mount the APC-R Mini / APC-R Mini Lite directly on the gimbal's RSA port — or use the APC-R Gimbal Adapter / DJI Focus Wheel with the original APC-R. See the APC-R Quick Start.
  3. Pair the FX3 to Middle Control over Wi-Fi or wired LAN — see the Sony Cameras setup guide.
  4. Connect the APC-R to your network. Middle Control discovers it automatically.
  5. (Optional) Connect Middle Control to your ATEM switcher and toggle ATEM Link (a Middle Control Pro feature) on the camera page to expose the FX3 to the ATEM control surface — see Control Sony Cameras with ATEM.
  6. Drive PTZ + camera control from Middle Control, an ATEM Advanced Panel joystick, a USB gamepad, the Middle Remote, or any VISCA controller.

  • Documentary and broadcast hybrids that already standardised on Sony FX-series and want PTZ-style remote framing without a dedicated head
