Middle Control can control an Apple iPhone as a production camera — exposure, focus, recording, and Live View — through the free Blackmagic Camera app, over the network. No APC-R or additional hardware is required.

Connecting the iPhone to Middle Control

Five steps, start to finish — the first three on the phone, the last two in Middle Control:

Install Blackmagic Camera Free on the App Store — the app that turns the iPhone into a production camera.

Enable the HTTP server In the Blackmagic Camera app's settings — this is what lets Middle Control talk to the phone.

Join the same network Put the phone on the same network as your computer for the simplest setup — Wi-Fi, or a USB Ethernet adapter for maximum stability. You can also reach it remotely over Tailscale or 5G (see below).

Add it from Scanned In Middle Control, the iPhone appears in the sidebar under Scanned — click + to add it. Not showing? Add it by the IP shown in the Blackmagic Camera app.

Assign a Camera ID Click the iPhone in the sidebar and pick its ID — controls, presets, and mappings follow it.

Remote networks (Tailscale / 5G)

The iPhone no longer has to share your local network. Pair and view a phone across networks over Tailscale or 5G — add it by the IP or Tailscale address shown in the Blackmagic Camera app. On higher-latency links, raise the SRT latency in the Blackmagic Camera app until Live View holds steady.

Controlling your Camera

Select the iPhone's ID on the Camera Page to drive exposure, focus, and recording, and watch its feed in Live View & Multi View. The exact settings depend on the model — see the compatibility page.

With Middle Control Pro, the iPhone integrates into your ATEM workflow via ATEM Link.

Quick Troubleshooting

• The iPhone doesn't appear in the Scanned list — check the HTTP server is enabled in the Blackmagic Camera app settings and the phone is on the same network (or reachable over Tailscale / 5G), then add it manually by IP.
• Live View stutters over Wi-Fi — prefer 5 GHz Wi-Fi, or a USB Ethernet adapter on the phone.
• Live View stutters or lags over 5G or a remote link — raise the SRT latency in the Blackmagic Camera app; a higher value trades a little delay for a steadier feed.
